With a population of 8400, Strathaven is a lively town. Shopping activity is centred on the Common Green, which has open space adjacent in Allison Green. The town infrastructure supports four schools, three elementary and one academy. There is also a library with two public halls and a large public park.

The park has facilities for football, bowling and putting along with the usual play areas for children and a boating pond. A particular feature of the park is the miniature railway which is operated by enthusiastic pensioners for the benefit of the children

There are a wide range of clubs and societies in the town catering for all interests and the public halls together with the many church halls are well used.
