The ruins of Strathaven Castle, also known as Avondale Castle, still dominate the town. Built in 1458, it replaced an earlier castle owned by the Douglas family. The Hamilton family owned the castle from 1611 and it was last occupied in 1716 when Anne, Duchess of Hamilton made it her residence

For safety reasons, it is not open to the public but can be viewed from the outside
